HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, EITHER TODAY OR WHEN YOUR YEAR STARTS

2016 in my culture – year of our Lord: Anno Domini. Too many people are willing to celebrate the New Year without acknowledging the religious significance.

Oh, I don’t mean going all Holy Joe, pompous and prim; I mean taking a moment to acknowledge where our calendar years come from … and noting how the months got their names.

It’s also wise to reflect about how Christmas ended up in December, rather than the summer months which is a more likely time for a census; and how it in turn was pasted over with this commercial wallpaper.

Perhaps if we think about the complete journey, we can appreciate the birth of Christ “out of season”; apply it to the rest of the year; and start to review how we really want to celebrate his coming: by being slaves to Mammon or opening our eyes to the worth of souls who might not necessarily see God from our angle, but who don’t try to mold him to fit desires of the flesh.
